Analysis
Jina Reader and Firecrawl both return clean text for LLMs, but they price different things: Jina bills tokens in the output, Firecrawl bills one credit per page.
The break-even in tokens per page
Jina's official top-up is $50 for 1 billion tokens ($0.05 per million). Reader charges for the tokens it returns. Jina does not publish tokens per page, so our headline figure for Jina is an assumption: at 2,000 tokens per page it costs $0.10 per 1,000 pages. Firecrawl Standard ($83/month billed annually for 100,000 credits) is $0.83 per 1,000 pages. On those numbers Jina is about 8.3x cheaper for typical short pages.
The break-even is pages of roughly 16,600 output tokens (about 12,450 words): below that Jina costs less per page, above it Firecrawl's flat credit costs less. Long documentation pages, PDFs and image-heavy pages can exceed this; most articles do not.
What is not equal
- Scope. Firecrawl adds site-wide crawl, map, search and browser interaction on the same credits. Jina's Reader is a fetch-and-clean endpoint (plus s.jina.ai search at a minimum of 10,000 tokens, i.e. $0.50 per 1,000 searches at the $50 pack rate).
- Blocked sites. Jina's own FAQ says a paid key does not unlock sites that block it; it only raises throughput. Firecrawl's pricing page does not itemize an unblocking tier either, so neither figure should be read as an anti-bot guarantee.
- Free use. Jina Reader works with no key at 20 requests/minute; new keys get 10M free tokens (about 5,000 pages at 2,000 tokens, if the free tokens suit your use). Firecrawl gives 1,000 credits/month with an account.
Verdict
For simple URL-to-markdown calls in an agent loop, Jina Reader is usually the cheaper and quicker start. For crawling whole sites, mapping, searching and structured JSON in one product, Firecrawl's per-page credit is easier to budget. Measure your real tokens per page first: that single number decides the comparison.
